A couple months back I had a guest post on Clothed Much where I shared a tutorial for making an extender slip. I just wanted to share the tutorial here, because now that the weather is warm it's time to start breaking out those dresses and skirts! I have seen so many cute dresses lately, but most of them are just a bit too short for my liking. However, all I have to do is put an extender slip underneath and that problem is solved!
I have purchased these wonderful accessories from a local boutique, but I never found any that were exactly what I wanted. Then I thought, "Hey, maybe I could make one." I must say that I have absolutely no sewing skills and my crafting skills are limited, so I decided to make this a "no-sew" project. If you have a sewing machine, feel free to sew on the trim, instead of using the fabric adhesive.
First, apply fabric adhesive to the bottom edge of the slip, in 6 inch sections. Press the edge of trim firmly against adhesive for 10-15 seconds before proceeding to next 6 inch section.
Once you reach the end, cut the trim and glue it down.
This is what your slip should look like with one layer of trim.
Add a second layer above the first. The spacing will depend on the size of your trim. I chose to leave about an inch between layers. Make sure your adhesive line is straight!
Once you reach the end of the second layer, cut the trim and glue it down.
Add as many layers as you would like. Here is my slip with 3 layers!
This project only took about 15 minutes and cost less than $15! If you already have an old slip, it would only cost a few dollars for the trim and a few dollars for the fabric adhesive. Slip extenders are seriously my lifesaver in summer...they make dressing modest super simple! I hope you will try this and be sure to let me know if you do!
LOVE IT! This is such a great way to add an extra something something to any outfit.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I know, I love the look it adds...gives it a kind of vintage feel :)
DeleteI love this! So stinkin' cute with the ruffles :) Although, with the glue, I'm not too sure how well it will hold up in the wash. Do you know by chance? You would probably have to hand wash and hang dry I assume?
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yeah, I just hand wash it and lay out to dry. I have washed it a couple times now and it has held up fine. I don't think it would do well in the washing machine though. I will probably do an adhesive touch up before I wash it again. You could definitely sew on the trim, but I just don't have the skills for that, haha!
DeleteLove this! I keep thinking I they should sell something like this, but now I can make one for myself! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteYou definitely should try it, so easy!
DeleteThat is an amazing idea! I cling tightly to my maxi skirts, and I shy away from anything over the knee- for both comfort and modesty's sake. Maybe this way, I can broaden my horizons!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, it makes shopping for cute dresses/skirts way easier...although I do love a good maxi skirt :)
DeleteWhat a great idea and it does sound and look so simple. I'm going to have to try this. It looks absolutely lovely in the outfit you've got on :)
ReplyDeleteAww, thank you so much! You definitely should try it :)
DeleteSo Cute!! And you are so smart!!
ReplyDeleteThank you...I'm not always the brightest bulb, but sometimes I have good ideas!
DeleteI love this idea and need to try it for work! You could even get a variety of trim colors & mix it up! Thanks for sharing, Jenny!
ReplyDeleteThis is perfect timing for me! I recently bought one of these awesome extender skirts but its very plain and I was thinking of adding lace to it...now I know how! And I was unaware there was such thing as fabric adhesive! I too can't sew AT ALL and will def be looking into that!

The fabric adhesive makes it so easy, but you will probably want to hand wash it...or at least put it on the delicates cycle in the washing machine!
DeleteWhat an awesome tutorial! Thanks so much for posting it on here (: I really need to do this to a few of my skirts that are a tad too short!

Can you believe that I don't own a slip? I know I should, and your post makes me believe that I could make my own. Great tutorial.

such a cute idea!! i love it!
ReplyDeleteThis is great!
ReplyDeleteI own at least 3 slips... All with extenders BUT I paid, like $30 each! ouch!
I might just have to try this!!
Yeah, they are kind of expensive to buy. I bet you could find a slip at a thrift store for a couple bucks and it would be super cheap to make!
DeleteI love this! When I was in the youth program at church it was hard to find dresses that were long enough and modest. I ended up sewing black lace on a few dresses to make them modest. I love this tutorial!
ReplyDeleteI bet they looked really cute with lace sewn on! I just don't have a sewing machine or the skills to use one :)
DeleteSo glad you reposted this! Definitely need to do this with some of my skirts!
ReplyDeleteAshley
So cute! What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteYou are my hero! Seriously, I recently passed up tons of cute summer dresses because they were just too darn short! I can't wait to try this, as it's something I think even I could do. Thanks so much for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI saw this when you did it on Clothed Much. I've been wanting to make one! It makes shopping so much easier knowing that you don't have to worry if a skirt is just an inch or two too short
ReplyDeletewow good product to keep at home!!!
ReplyDeleteYou know what? I never thought of having a skirt which the slip shows. When I was growing up, women would just die if they showed their slip. I find that it looks pretty, and it looked really well with the skirt. If I get a short skirt that I like, then I can make it work with a project like this. I might wind up sewing it, just as reinforcement, but I see that it isn't necessary. Thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of slip would you say works best? Just a cheap-o one or should I go higher quality?
ReplyDeleteI used a cheap-o one and it works just fine :)
Deletenice. I have a couple of skirts that I wish were a little bit longer and this would be perfect
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of fabric would you recommend for the trim if the dress is lace? Or would it still look good with a lace trim?
ReplyDeleteIf you could find a lace that matched I think it would look fine. Otherwise, i would probably do a satin trim. It's hard to say without seeing the dress, but I'm sure whatever you chose it would look great :)
DeleteThanks for sharing, your slip is very lovely.
ReplyDeleteHi! This is so great. I was going to buy an extender slip, but I think I'll try making my own first. I don't know how to sew, so I was super happy to find your tutorial! Where do I find lace trim like you used?
ReplyDeleteThanks! :)
Thank you! You should be able to find lace trim at a craft or fabric store, like Hobby Lobby or Joann Fabrics :)
DeleteWow! This is great not only as a skirt or dress extender but as an actual slip extender when one can't find the correct slip length for a longer dress or skirt.lov it! Thnks!
