Lunar Eclipse (AKA Blood Moon)

Last night I stayed up late to witness the total lunar eclipse, which happens when the moon becomes covered by the Earth's shadow.  The moon doesn't go completely dark, but instead takes on a reddish glow, causing some people to call it a "Blood Moon".  There will be four consecutive total lunar eclipses happening through September 2015, which scientists call a tetrad.  Apparently tetrads are pretty rare occurrences and the next set won't happen until 2032.

I was so glad we had a clear sky to see the eclipse take place.  It was fun to bring out my tripod and try to get some shots with my telephoto lens.  I'll admit that I had no idea what I was doing, but after experimenting a bit I was able to get a few good shots.  Unfortunately, my camera battery died right before the moon was totally covered (just my luck), but that gives me more incentive to stay up late for the next one in October!

Did any of you stay up late to check out the Blood Moon?

  3. So fun! I ran outside to see it but we live right by a park with huge trees so I couldn't see it and was too scared to walk down the street to see it. I'm not in Utah anymore hahaha

  4. Beautiful photos! It's so difficult to take good ones at night too! I'm a bit bummed I missed it since it was too cloudy out where I was.

  5. Wow! You got some amazing shots! My boyfriend popped up so fast and basically ripped me out of bed to go see it! Your pics captured it much better than my half asleep eyes did ;)
