On the third day of our trip we hopped on a tour bus and headed to the beautiful Chartres Cathedral, which was about 50 miles SW of Paris.  The beautiful architecture was very similar to that of the Notre Dame Cathedral.  It had gorgeous stained glass windows, with each panel telling a different story from the Bible.  Interesting fact: All of the stained glass pieces were carefully removed in 1939, right before the Germans invaded France.  Another interesting fact: The Chartres Cathedral was ordered to be destroyed, because it was thought to be occupied by German troops.  However, one of the American soldiers, Welborn Griffith, questioned the need to destroy the cathedral without any evidence, so he volunteered to go behind enemy lines to find out if it was truly occupied.  It turns out the cathedral was clear of enemies, so the order was reversed.

Our next stop was supposed to be Versailles, but unfortunately the employees were on strike that day!  We were so bummed, but instead we had the opportunity to visit another beautiful French chateau called Vaux-le-Vicomte.  It was built  for a man named Nicolas Fouquet, who was the superintendent of finances for Louis XIV, the "Sun King".  Construction on Vaux-le-Vicomte began in 1658 and was completed in 1661.  Unfortunately, the King had Nicolas Fouquet arrested and imprisoned for treason that same year (someone was jealous).

More pictures to come soon! Sorry I haven't been posting very often lately...I'm going to try to be better about that!!
